Welcome to our Produce Report

Each year we provide all of the national finalists an enviable prize – to travel to one of Australia’s leading food and wine regions to meet the passionate producers and growers responsible for Australia’s renowned produce.  This is made possible with the support of Australia's Rural Research and Development Corporations. The imagery used throughout this article were taken during the 2009 produce tour, while touring Rieschieck Orchard in Gruyere, Victoria.

Times have changed and although there was once a time when your local grocery store would stock strawberries only in summer, a time when people could only enjoy fresh produce at its peak season, most fresh produce is now available all year round.

Food trends are showing us that the appreciation of in-season produce is rapidly increasing as a new wave of chefs and home cooks rethink and adjust to include seasonal produce in their everyday menus.

In-season produce means better quality, taste and nutritional values as it has been grown in its natural conditions, as compared to out-of-season produce. Knowing how to choose in-season also saves you money as you will be purchasing fresh produce when it is in its peak supply. ROrchard_Pears_walking

In our environmentally conscious society using in-season Australian produce over imported produce can also assist in you reducing your “carbon footprint”.  Imported produces equates to greater food miles – larger footprints on the environment – as the produce has to travel further to end up on your plate.

By choosing to eat seasonally you are reducing your environmental footprint, saving money and supporting local Australian farmers.  Most importantly, you will be eating fresh produce at its best – tastier, and better for you!

Our produce report will keep you updated with all things in-season, seasonal recipes as well as discussing any interesting trend changes.  If you have anything you would like to contribute to our updates please feel free to email it through to us at This e-mail address is being protected from spambots.
